why the design of iPhone 4 is not innovative

i find it quite interesting how everyone praises the simplicity of the design of the iPhone 4. It does look cool and pure, but it is not new or innovative. In fact the design somewhat reminds me of earlier products launched by LG (Prada phone) or Porsche Design - a black box with a metal rim. What's so new about that ? AJ

  1. Hmm...spoken like a true product designer...still living in 'form' land...i.e 'Device' land. Apple and all the other i-Steve products are successful because of the delight they offer the user. Whether it's a Macbook, iPAd, iPhone or iPod. iPhone is therefore not innovative for it's form, it's innovative for UI and it's ability to make any kind of product adopter desire it and use it with ease. A device has to be beyond what encase it - a device more and more needs to be about user interaction and surprising ease of use...see link below for an excellent article by Mark Rolston from Frog Design.
