The end of 'plain' or just the beginning ?

I must admit that I like the simplicity in the design and purity of the materials used for this shoe horn designed by Japanese designer Nendo for Maruni (the two part being held together by magnets), but sometimes I wonder how much more simpler we should design things. This is a good example how simplicity works combined with a witty idea, but there are many other examples out there where form is being reduced next to nothing without any great idea behind it. Minimalism being used to challenge what is considered too complex. but don't we like complexity sometimes ? Are we getting too used to 'plain' and simple because something appears to be easier to 'understand' ? If I look around me at times a lot looks like the building blocks i used as a kid. (AJ)

  1. Actually this shoe horn is NOT self-explanatory, there defies the logic of SIMPLE. It's form is beautifully simple, but only if you know to to take it apart (without destroying the delicate looking wood) will it become simply functional too.
